# Integration

> Connect your backend's search and query APIs to familiar shell commands.

Mirage can use your backend's search, queries and metadata to answer shell
commands with fewer requests and downloads. For example, `grep` can use a
RAG index to find candidate documents, and `head` can fetch a few database
rows without reading the whole table.

| Capability | Commands | Your backend provides |
| - | - | - |
| [Search](/home/integration/search) | `grep`, `rg` | Candidate files or lines from a search index. |
| [Lines](/home/integration/lines) | `head`, `tail`, `wc -l` | First or last rows, line counts and live updates. |
| [Checksums](/home/integration/checksums) | `md5sum`, `sha256sum` and other hash commands | A stored hash or a hash computed remotely. |
| [Walks](/home/integration/walks) | `find`, `du`, `ls -R`, `tree` | A directory tree returned in bulk. |

Supported VFS types already connect these capabilities where available.
For a custom VFS, implement the methods in each guide. Mirage handles
command options and formatting, and uses ordinary file reads or directory
listings when a capability cannot answer.
